The amygdala is an almond-sized part of the brain that controls our stress response. The amygdala is alarmed by differences and soothed by similarities. In today’s ProTip, explore this ice breaker activity to help students find similarities to calm the amygdala.

Here’s how:

  1. Find simple images that could be categories for grouping students.
  2. Save the images to a flash drive or cloud storage.
  3. Upload the images into the whiteboard and stack them.
  4. Instruct the students to sort themselves based on the top image.
  5. Tap twice on the image to reveal the next image.

Tune in every week for a new ProTip filled with bite-sized information about all the brilliant Promethean products.

Julie Porter is an Education Consultant for Promethean, following 7 years in the classroom as a music, art, and theater teacher. She has been drawing since the age of 2, when she made a lovely crayon drawing of “Willie the Spider.” Julie has had some interesting freelance assignments along the way, from hand-lettered menus for Princes Charles when he visited The College of William & Mary, to a sculpted Globe Theater made out of cake, to detailed illustrations of animal poop for Rocky Mountain National Park’s Junior Ranger publications. Thinking up and composing the ProTips has allowed weekly exercises in drawing, lettering, and education–her three favorite things!
